Devil is in the Details
Van Dessel surpasses existing 29er technology to bring us the Jersey Devil

Way back in 2000, Van Dessel followed its successful road bike line with a series of relatively untested 29er mountain bikes - the Buzz Bomb and Buzz Bomb FS. Despite limited availability and a general newness of 29ers, the Buzz Bombs were loved by those who managed to get their hands on them and were well regarded for their stability and handling. But the bikes weren't quite perfect, like most 29ers it was heavier than most other race-ready mountain bikes.

In response to repeated pleas for a lighter Buzz Bomb, Van Dessel is surpassing its Buzz Bomb line with a new model, the Jersey Devil. The Devil is designed to be a race-ready mountain bike to complement Van Dessel's existing line of competition road frames.

With that in mind, Edwin Bull, Van Dessel's chief designer, reached for the existing Buzz Bomb frame and shaved off weight while increasing its lateral stiffness.

"We've been doing the 29" bikes since 2000, with rave reviews and overwhelmingly positive feedback" explained Bull, "and have absolutely no reason to change anything as far as geometry."

After extensive changes to the original Buzz Bomb's tube butting and shaping, the Jersey Devil emerged. Three variants have been created:

  • Jersey Devil FS, a full suspension variant with 4-bar rear suspension and 100mm of travel.
  • Jersey Devil HT, a hard-tail with carbon fiber seat stays.
  • Ramble Tamble, an all variant of the Devil HT with an Eccentric BB, Rohloff dropouts, and derailleur hanger - so that it is not limited just to single-speed.

The Jersey Devils also address previous criticisms of Van Dessel's battleship grey paint jobs. Both Jersey Devil variants will come in dark green while the Ramble Tamble will feature its own rust-red paint job (and stay tuned to see the finish on the new Gin and Trombones 'cross frames).

These Devils will be available for sale in mid to late August. Cyclists fortunate enough to be at Pedro's Mountain Bike Festival, July 28-30, will get a sneak peek at all three new bikes at the Van Dessel booth. Price for the Jersey Devil FS will start at $2,499; for the Devil HT, $2,399; and $1,699 for the Ramble Tamble.
