For sale: carbon fiber and camaraderie
DOVER, N.J. (February 8, 2006) The day customer loyalty becomes a product packaged and sold on store shelves, buy it...lots of it. Until then, build it, carbon fiber by carbon fiber, or, in Van Dessel Cycles' case, mile by mile. Starting March 15, new owners of Van Dessel bikes will get a bonus multi-day camp in either California or New York when they purchase their bike either directly from Van Dessel or from a Van Dessel retailer. How it works: buyers purchase a Van Dessel bike from their local shop or via vandesselsports.com and get a complimentary multi-day training camp to go with it. When the new owners arrive at camp, their brand new, fully assembled Van Dessel bikes will be waiting for them. No one would argue that so far, the program seems like a good deal for buyers. What comes next is usually reserved for cyclists in upper income tax brackets. For the modest price of a Van Dessel, each camper will be professionally fitted to optimize his or her position and then the remaining days will be spent training under the instruction of a professional coach. To top it off, the "offer you can't refuse" clincher: room and board, mechanic, and support van are all included. "What's great about a camp is the camaraderie one gets from a multi-day trip," said Didier Blanc, who came up with the idea for Van Dessel. "Van Dessel owners should have that feel-good feeling normally associated with getting a new bike multiplied by 10 and they will get the best out of riding their new bike." Van Dessel makes a point to match the right bike with the right owner, which is why buyers must fill out a bike fit worksheet as part of the purchasing process. The first camp will be exclusively for brand new carbon fiber Solstice owners. Multisport camps are geared more toward new owners of Project WR time-trial bikes, and track camps will help owners of new Drag Strip Courage Olympic Build track bikes maximize their performance on the track. Van Dessel's cyclocross camp in September should help get new owners of the Gin & Trombones motivated and ready for 'cross season. "Fitting, testing, and coaching are big issues to owning a bike," explained Blanc. "Fitting that coaching companies can achieve is something that nobody can really duplicate. Camps get you to hang out with coaches and give you opportunities to leave camp not just a better rider, but with a base to get to the next level. For instance, a cat 2 racer can be tweaked to become a cat 1. A recreational rider, who is really only looking for better fitness or more enjoyment out of riding, can be given a few guidelines to achieve those goals." There are nine Van Dessel camps to choose from based on buyers' bike choice. Road camps start on March 15 with a five-day camp for Solstice owners with Wenzel Coaching in Half Moon Bay, Calif. Multisport enthusiasts get their chance a day later on March 16 with a four-day camp for Project WR owners. Additional road, multisport, track, and cyclocross camps will take place a little later in the season through Mike Fraysse Sports based in Glen Spey, N.Y. All this for the price of a bike, who could resist?
